Zoey's Story
There’s a saying that we become the person we once needed.
When Patricia first invited me to join Project Anchor, I was genuinely excited. Not simply because it was another project, but because it reflected something I had been thinking about for years.
As someone who came to Canada as an international student at the age of fifteen, I’ve often wondered what it would have been like if every young international student had someone a few steps ahead to turn to. Someone who understood not only the practical challenges of adapting to a new education system, but also the loneliness, uncertainty, and quiet moments of wondering where you belong.
High school is already a time of tremendous change. Navigating it in a new country, often while living in a homestay or away from family, brings another layer of challenges. Yet many students go through these experiences without a trusted guide or support system.
That’s why Project Anchor resonates with me so deeply.
My hope for Project Anchor is simple: to combine my professional experience with my own lived experience to help young international students feel a little less alone. I don’t believe mentors need to have all the answers. Sometimes what matters most is knowing someone understands your journey, believes in your ability to grow, and can help illuminate the path ahead.
I’m grateful to work alongside Patricia, Joyce, and our volunteer mentors to build the kind of support system I once wished existed, and one that I hope will become a steady source of encouragement for the next generation of international students.
